Procedural Learning VS Fact Absorption

Posted by Psyla on June 11, 2008 @ 05:54AM

Further to my last post, I was looking into the difference between learning knowledge vs concepts/systems, how procedural learning (best understood through play and experimentation) gives us real tools, where knowledge is more like a static building block.

Okay so that was overly vague…

Take for example physics. Pre-quake era research tells us of a system used to test fundamental understanding of Newtonian forces, a list of 30 concepts called the Force Concept Inventory. The old schools used to put much more emphasis on knowledge retention, facts, blocks, without really teaching a fundamental understanding of those concepts in a way that the students could apply them in a wide variety of situations.

The result was that in most cases, a 8 year old did better than a school leaver in the FCI test.

Hrm, maybe the reassessment of learning technique in a AQ era can attribute at least something positive to the epic upheaval.
