Memories of Erebus

When I was a kid back at Erebus, it wasn’t all quiet and undisturbed farm life. Apart from the occasional roaming Polariak that would try enter the village, and make off with one of the herd animals, there were other dangers.

You’d get these splicers, we just called them Sealamanders, that would invade the village almost yearly. These splicers were some kind of cross between venomous lizards, rats and seals. They were deposited in Antarctica by some corporation just as the Erebus colony started up independently.

While this was thought to be a humane effort to get them out of the picture, the little bastards proliferated. This wasn’t too much of a big deal, as they stuck to the coasts and ice caves, miles away from Erebus. The real problem was that every year, a batch of Sealmanders would be born, mutated so that they exhibited more lizard than mammal DNA in their makeup. This meant that they were cold-blooded, and could only really live off the warmth of their mothers until they became too large.

At this point, swarms of them would flock to the solar lamps of Erebus, and we’d have to cull them back, or they’d tear the town apart.

I never felt happy doing it, but I guess there was no way around it. We were a poor town, struggling to carve out a niche for our existence. We couldn’t possibly hope to support waves of poorly-spliced, destructive critters.

They made good eating though.
