Thoughts on History and Archaeology

Posted on August 23, 2008 @ 10:27AM

I have been enjoying “The Age of Light, History of a Brave New World.” lately. As much as I hated the class at first, I’ve completely changed my mind about it. While it focuses on the world after the quakes, it makes me think about the world before them.

It seems that the population of the world was much more widely dispersed that it is in our present era. We have been told to refer to our current time as an “era,” because we have come to realize that time is cyclical. New civilizations arise as surely as old ones fall. Sometimes due to social factors, sometimes environmental. The Mayans knew this. They chronicled previous eras, and they predicted the start of our current one. They didn’t know what it would be like, just that it would happen. It was inherent in their advanced astrology. They knew that the sun went through phases, and the start of a new cycle would effect the earth.

Although it is merely conjecture, I believe this is what happened to the Dinosaurs, the Celians and people of the era directly preceding ours. It must have felt like the end of the world to them, but many families survived it, and much of their literature and technology did as well

The Visionistic Arts pervaded all of this. Although many of the strongest users may not have known them as we know them today, they surely did possess them.

Sometimes I wish I was an archaeologist, helping to bridge that era before us into modern day. There is much we can learn from our history, and we have a chance to make that happen. We have historic records, such as the Archaic Library which could supplement field excavation to help us know more.

Of course, I must devote my training to the Politia. Perhaps one day, after I retire, I can involve myself in Archaeology. However, it does not mean I can rule it out as an interest during my time at Tosadae.
