A new friend, with some food advice.

I was leading my Archeop back to its pen after Jene and I had just finished crizettes practice.
“Oh no!” she squealed, quite suddenly.
“Jene! What is it?” I asked, not knowing what she was so concerned about.
“I told Ralm that I would cook with him tonight. It’s this thing that he wanted to do with someone else, but I forgot that I have a date,” She replied.
“Wait a minute,” I said. “So this thing with Ralm wasn’t a date?”
“Oh, Nkiru. No. He’s not my type at all.” She replied.
“Does he know this?” I asked.
She looked at me, puzzled. “Um. Yeah, of course.”
“Honestly woman.” I said. “You are boy crazy.”
“I know! You go!” she said.

I tried to argue, but next thing I knew, I was in front of a large frying pan over at Ralm’s dorm. Ralm was from the South Republic, and apparently his first love was cooking. He would have been a chef if he didn’t think he had a better chance at success at Tosadae. “Make the bread through the politia, so I can make my own bread later.” He told me. He seemed to think that was quite funny. I didn’t really understand.

Ralm wasn’t really that fazed that Jene hadn’t turned up. I guess there really wasn’t any romantic interest there.
“It’s just boring if you have not one to cook for,” He told me. On the menu tonight, was Cowlaroo. This was a splicer that was a local South Republic beast. A mix between a domesticated milk-bearing stock animal and a giant marsupial native to what was once Australia. “The most juicy, succulent meat you will ever come across,” Ralm told me. “If they ever completely nailed splicing for culinary purposes, this was it. I’m surprised it isn’t some massive export industry. I think they might milk them too.”

Ralm talked the whole time he was cooking. Just talking about where he grew up, what he was doing with the meal, what flavors worked well… everything. It reminded me of one of those archaic television cooking shows from before the Great Quakes that they used to run on the Vyber-Net.

I had a really fun evening, and we agreed to make it a regular thing. I’d like to learn more about cooking. It’s a much nicer experience that getting food from a machine, and it would be great to organize an evening with a few other friends some time.
