A horrifying day at the stadium

Posted on October 18, 2008 @ 09:32PM

Derf and his friend Kam were participating in this Advanced Flight Tournament. I wasn’t overly interested, but this was a very big thing for Derf, and rather than upset him, I said I’d go along. U.G knows I’m not much of a person for crowds, but Nkiru said she’d go with me, so I wouldn’t feel too nervous.

I asked Grenci if he was going, and he said he was sorry he was going to miss it, but he had a weekly field training day where he was going to, quote:
“Do some stuff that’s just as cool as watching some noobs fly a plane for the first time.”
That made me laugh, but he said it would be pretty cool anyway, and that I should definitely go.

I met up with Nkiru outside the stadium, and she looked exhausted.
“I think I just wrote a book-sized assignment,” she said. She was pretty worn out, so we went and found our seats. It was actually really exciting to see the FX-80 Fighters fly around in an enclosed arena like that. A few of them hit the sides, and instead of gasping, I found myself squealing with glee. Nkiru would give me these funny looks, and I’d go: “What?”

Derf did very well. I’m so proud of him! A few more people tried out, and finally, Kam got into the fighter.
“Bet he was annoyed he was last,” said Nkiru.

Kam started his maneuvering routine, and all of a sudden I heard someone in my mind from across the stadium: “When that kid reaches the top of the stadium, I’m going to detonate this sucker and take out half this stadium…”

I screamed, but not many people heard me over all the noise. I got a few funny looks, but I grabbed Nkiru and ran for the control room where Derf was.
“Miro! What is it?” Nkiru yelled at me as we ran.
“Someone’s sabotaged the stadium! Bomb!” I yelled. In retrospect, I have no idea why she believed me, but she overtook me and made it into the control room before me.

“Derf!” Nkiru yelled at him, “You’ve gotta make them stop! Someone’s sabotaged the stadium!” Derf ran over to the communications panel and smashed down on the link to Kam.
“Kam! You’ve gotta land now!” he yelled. I couldn’t hear Kam’s response, but Derf yelled back: “You can’t! Just land!” I looked out the windows to see Kam descending, I looked up to the top of the stadium dome, just as resounding ‘boom’ went off and an explosion. Kam’s ship caught fire, but he managed to land it without injuring himself or anyone.

What is going on here?
