Elijah Cruise had grabbed me from my cell, getting two strong men to lead me to where I would have my personality burned away. They wanted their priestess back, but they wanted her to be compliant, which meant no room for my mind.

They brought me into the Hall of Shadows itself, a massive dome, with an occulus at the top, and with square indentations on the outside. This structure had haunted my dreams for a long time, and only when I was in it did I realize that it was based on the Parthenon of ancient Rome. The hall was supposed to be located in the South Republic, where Australia once was, but I couldn’t give up hope. Grenci would come, he’d figure it out no matter what.

My thoughts turned to Derf, I hoped I would see him again. It seemed like the only thing important to me now. I liked him. I really did, and I couldn’t bear not getting the chance to know him.

Cruise led me out to the altar. A beam of light from the occulus enveloped it in light, and it appeared to be made out of obsidian. I tried to run, but I was restrained by the two men leading me out there.
“Bind her to it!” Cruise barked at the two men. They tied me to the altar and I began to cry. Four hooded men walked up to positions around the altar, with Cruise at my head. Each of the four men held a bowl with flames pouring out of them, Blue, Yellow, Red and White.

Cruise began to chant, softly. It seemed to go on forever and I began to struggle. I felt lightheaded, my mind was pulling free of my body. All of a sudden, I heard a loud explosion. The dome around me began to fade, it was a holographic overlay. It revealed that we were still in a large room, but it was square, and can’t have been the real Hall of Shadows. That gave me comfort, but Cruise began to chant louder and faster. There was shouting and I heard a shot. Fire blazed above me and Cruise was engulfed.

“Grenci?” I said, and passed out.

The next thing I knew, Grenci was leading me out into the light, where I saw Derf waiting. I’d never been so happy to see anyone.
“I knew you and Grenci would come,” I told him. “It was all I thought about.’
“It’s ok.” he said. “It’s going to be ok.”
