Kam's big day ruined.

Today was Kam’s big day. The qualifying rounds of the Advanced Flight was on. The higher-ups at Tosadae had converted the the Zero-G stadium for the trials. I went along with Alicia and sat down.

The contenders had to execute a series of maneuvers, without, um, messing them up too bad I guess. It got pretty scary in parts, some of these guys weren’t that good, and as they hit the sides of the dome, the field flashed up and made a large fizzing sound. We saw Derf get in, and he looked like he looked like he had done pretty well. Apparently Kam was up last, and I could just tell it was killing him.

The audience was pretty into the whole thing, but some of these guys were so bad that I was just happy that the Tournament conveners had seen fit to disable the weapons in the FX-80 fighters. I would have felt better if they’d completely taken out the deteurium reserves from the planes, but Kam assured me before the tournament that it takes a lot of preparation to set up the weapons in those fighters, and that it hadn’t been done for these planes. I’d hate to think what might happen if one of the contenders were unbalanced enough to want to try them out on the crowd.

Kam climbed into the cockpit of his fighter and rose to the center of the stadium. He started performing some some barrel rolls, when out of the corner of my eye I saw Miro and Nkiru running towards the control room.

What was going on?

Moments later there was an explosion at the top of the stadium, and Kam’s fighter started careening towards the ground.

Oh no! Kam!
