Back from vacation so I thought I would post something the I stumbled across.

http://www.tdrinc.com/ultima.html

When I started sketching out the back-story of my character this is how I somewhat imagined the Corporate Islands. Well somewhat this way, not nearly as huge though.

So, if this was available would you move in to live there? Granted it is expected that if you lived there you would probably work there as well, commuting would be great, I think there might be a long line for the elevator though.

Heh…vaguely reminds me of the Eiffel Tower. That’s the near future when over planet is overpopulated with scarce quantities of land due to the rising sea levels. It could be used in space colonies.

I remember a Discovery show on something similar from about a year ago… It was pretty interesting.

Something to keep in mind. Before the fall of the Twin Towers, which was an idea somewhat along the same thought line. If you look at how the Twin Towers were set up, a person could be born, go to school, grow up, live and work, and never leave the building. All facilities were enclosed within each tower.

So here too, we something on a much grander scale. But with something like this, not only would it have stores, schools, hospitals, recreation, etc… It would probably also have places in which to grow foods, and be able to manufacture much more.

Nice find Opsidian. Definately something to take a deeper look at, and I could easily see the Corporate Islands made up of a number of these that are linked together by some type of subway/rail system.

Gungun City

Not sure how I would feel about growing up in a giant building and never leaving. However that gives into another idea that I just had though. Having a facility like this being self contained so that you didn’t have to leave would be a big step forward in space exploration. Once you have the design planned and proven then you would just adopt that for space. Get your people on board and take a trip. Then like Strike said it could be used in colonies, find a way to land it and your good to go.

If I remember correctly there is one city in VQ that is under water, that would be a good realm for a Gungun City type place.

Not sure if I would want to live inside a tower like that though, wouldn’t have been able to get Friday off due to snow then lol. Then again, maybe it would mean that I would get my laptop fixed and returned to me faster lol.

Naw… The tech that’s suppose to come fix it would have gotten caught up in the people-jam waiting for the elevator… He’d have gotten on the wrong express elevator, then when he tried to double back, got lost in the maze of hallways trying to find your apartment number.

Nah…He uses his teleportation device with a GPS to compute the exact location of the apartment, then he presses a button and instantly appears in front of the door. Only problem is if you’re not home to receive it…oh well the wait is longer.

Meh… Teleportation is still experimental, with my luck I’d wind up half-in/half-out.

And can you imagine the freefall you’d get if they really missed on the upper floors? Gotta love gravity.

Could present the same problems that occured from time to time on Stargate, or even a few episodes of Star Trek (TOS). Thinking about it makes me wince.

I think we are just a little bit off from teleportation. http://www.newscientist.com/channel/fundamental…

Reading to much Quantum material tends to give me a headache.

LOL, actually FedEx did use their GPS and showed up at my house while I was gone and now I have to track down the package at their office. Anyone want to buy a laptop lol.

I could always use one. Especially if it’s capable of remote dial up.

Interesting article… I can see a new magazine that I’m going to have to start reading. :) Nice find Opsidian.

It’s a Compaq Persario C714, just 3 months old. During the downtime of having it I went to the darkside and got a MacBook Pro since I am doing more print work this year.

Ah…The dark side. Not good come back into the light. You walk a path of no viruses and spyware, good graphics, user friendly, and more. NOOOOOO…lol I use both.

I have almost no experience with Macs… My entire career started with word processors, and graduated(?) to PCs, where I’ve been ever since. I can remember when everything was in some version of Basic language, then onto DOS run applications, and all the nightmares when Windows first came out. LoL, UG I’m starting to sound old. ;)

Anyway… My dad is who got me started in computers… At some point after I left for the Marine Corps, he got into Macs, and swears by them to this day. Since 99% of the people that I deal with, and all of the sytems that utilize at work and with the Corps are all PC based programs, I never took that plunge.

We’ll see what the future brings…

LoL. It’s good to have experience with all sorts of operating systems. I’m currently trying to grasp Linux and Unix. Macs have the best graphics hands down, but Microsoft rules the office world. Most businesses use PCs or Unix. Yet what OS is around in Atlantia?

I’ve been a linux user for the past 8 years or so off and on. The last few years I’ve been stuck in the Microsoft world mostly because of the museum I volunteer at since everything there is windows. Vista came along and when I got a new laptop I was forced to have it instead of XP, anyhow, can’t stand it. Since the Macs now have Intel chips I can dual boot with Windows if I need to. My printing guy really got happy when I told him I got a Mac though, now he doesn’t need to mess with the typeset when I print something there.

I would think that the OS in the VQ world would be of a Linux flavor since it is open source or mostly web based. In the book Lazer does some feed searches over the Vybernet and has a customized searcher so that leads to my theory on both open source and web based. Either way I wouldn’t see Microsoft surviving without a few changes. Imagine if the Black Guard had some Microsoft code in their DNA, they would have to shut down and restart nightly lol.

Yeap Vista is abysmal. I have a dual boot between XP and Leopard. Hmm if the Black Guard had a Windows OS, it’d be so easy to defeat them. Bombard their circuits with destructive spyware and viruses, then sit back and watch them rot.
